Octobruary

What's that old corny saying? "Ski the snow on the ground, not the date on the calendar?" Winter 2020 came roaring to life on October 20th here in the Wasatch. Temps in the teens and close to 2 feet of new snow made for a memorable start to the new season. After two more pow days on the 21st and 22nd, it seemed like things would calm down for the remainder of the month. However, if there's one thing I've learned from the previous nine winters in Utah, it's to never assume anything. A record shattering cold front brought 17 more inches of cold smoke and turned October into January. Tuesday and Wednesday will rank up there with some of the best days this season. I hate saying that since it's only October, but it's true. The randomness of winter means nothing is guaranteed. We had a lot of snow in October 2012 too and that season was rather forgettable. We hardly had any snow through November last year and it ended up being a 700 inch winter. I guess what I'm trying to say is don't take it for granted. Octobruary has been insane. Hopefully we have another good season. We're due to string a few good ones together, right?! Hopefully the persistent weak layer that's pretty much guaranteed to form doesn't plague us for the entire season. For now, I'm just happy to be riding pow again. It's good to be back. Welcome to Winter!
