We're Riding Pow Today...

"Yeah, we're riding pow today..." That's exactly what Zac said as we pulled up to the trailhead on an abnormally warm and sunny day in March 2017. It hadn't snowed in over a week, the temps had been getting well above freezing for several straight days, and my base layer of choice was a tank top. I wasn't buying it.

Of course, we all have our little spots where we know we can pretty much always find good snow. And Zac and his brother Andrew had one in mind. We were skinning up in slush the whole way to the ridge. It was to the point where I was thinking we got way too late of a start. Zac kept insisting that we were gonna ride pow though, so we kept going. Sure enough, just on the other side of the sub ridge we took up, cold dry snow was waiting.

Andrew is a phenomenal photographer, and like me is always behind the lens, never in front of it. At our first regroup point, I noticed one little spot of light on an otherwise completely shaded slope. I asked Andrew if he could do a pow slash right in that spot of sun. He said yes, but was wondering if it was too far away to capture. I told him it wasn't a problem since I packed the long lens.

Andrew nailed the turn and luckily I didn't blow the shot. I wasn't expecting for his shadow to be captured in the powder cloud. The sun just happened to be in the perfect spot behind us. And we definitely rode pow!
