Pic of the Day: July 30
Welcome to nuclear summer... Daily highs in the hundreds for the next five days have me longing for autumn. It'll be here soon. Who knows what shape we'll be in though. Australia's 2nd outbreak of COVID-19 doesn't inspire much hope for the situation here in the US. They had it well under control and it still came back. What's a 2nd wave gonna look like here where no one seems to give a fuck about doing the right thing?
Once in a Lifetime Experience
July did bring a brief break from the pandemic monotony. Comet Neowise survived its trip around the sun and put on a show in the night sky. I took this photo in the early morning on July 12 from behind the radar domes on Francis Peak.
This particular morning was my first (and most successful) Neowise photo mission. I almost stayed in bed when my alarm went off at 245am. But seeing how the comet wouldn't be back for 6800 years, I decided I better get my ass out of bed. It was well worth it. Subsequent missions were not nearly as fruitful.
It's pretty cool being able to see a 3 mile wide ball of ice and rock hurtle through space millions of miles away.
