Pic of the Day: May 27

Since astronauts will be launching to space from Cape Canaveral for the first time since July 2011 today...

STS-135

One of the cool things about growing up in Florida was having the ability to just walk outside my parents' house to watch Space Shuttle launches. Toward the end of the program, I would drive over and camp along the intracoastal to catch the launch, maybe spend some time at the beach. Maybe skip school depending on when the launch was...

This photo was taken by my sister during the final Space Shuttle launch on July 8, 2011. Believe it or not, none of the photos I took turned out that day. But I was young and didn't know what the hell I was really doing anyways. So shout out to Stephanie for getting the shot. I was just happy to be there. Thankful I could catch a flight home from Salt Lake for one more launch.

I was hoping to be in Florida today. That was always the plan, even back in 2011. But COVID-19 had other plans. Since traveling is still a bad idea, I'll be watching on TV from my home in SLC. I know my family in Florida will be watching. If you're near the Space Coast today, be sure to run out and catch a glimpse of the launch.
